ZOLA TAYLOR | 1938-2007
May 3, 2007
LOS ANGELES -- Zola Taylor, who broke gender barriers in the 1950s as a member of the Platters, harmonizing with her male colleagues on hits like ''The Great Pretender,'' has died. She was 69.
Ms. Taylor, who later gained attention when she claimed to be pop idol Frankie Lymon's widow, died Monday, said her nephew Alfie Robinson. She had been bedridden after several strokes and died at Parkview Community Hospital in Riverside County from complications of pneumonia, he said.
Founding Platters member Herb Reed said he spotted Ms. Taylor, the sister of Cornell Gunter of the Coasters, rehearsing with a girl group in 1955 and knew immediately she had the charisma and vocal chops the R&B group needed.
The all-male group had just signed with Mercury after its single ''Only You'' topped the charts, and its manager thought they needed a female voice to soften their sound.
''The Great Pretender'' raced to the No. 1 spot on both R&B and pop music charts in the United States and Europe, according to The Encyclopedia of Pop, Rock and Soul by Irwin Stambler.
But the Platters' success began to fizzle after 1959, when four members were arrested in a Cincinnati hotel and accused of using drugs and soliciting prostitutes.
Ms. Taylor was back in the spotlight in the 1980s when she and two other women claimed to be Lymon's widow and fought over his royalties. The courts eventually sided with one of the other women.

Musician dies hours before performance
http://www.ricoreeds.com/resources/r...in_Batiste.jpg
NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana (AP) -- Clarinetist Alvin Batiste, who toured with Ray Charles, recorded with Branford Marsalis and taught pianist Henry Butler, died Sunday of an apparent heart attack. He was in his 70s.
Batiste died only hours before he was to perform with Harry Connick Jr. and Marsalis at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, festival officials said.
Marsalis' record label released Batiste's latest CD, "Marsalis Music Honors Alvin Batiste," just a few weeks ago. Marsalis also played on the album.
Batiste, a jazz clarinetist, was considered one of the founders of the modern jazz scene in New Orleans. While his exact age was not immediately known, festival officials said he was born in New Orleans in 1932.
Batiste also wrote for and toured with Billy Cobham and Cannonball Adderley.
A longtime teacher at Southern University in Baton Rouge, he created the Batiste Jazz Institute -- one of the first programs of its kind in the nation -- and taught jazz at the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts.
His students included Marsalis, Donald Harrison, Kent Jordan, Michael Ward, Herlin Riley, Charlie Singleton, Woodie Douglas and others.
"He was not only a teacher, he was my father away from home," Butler said. "He taught us about music, the history of music and the business of music. The ones who had the benefit of learning from him are better musicians and better people today."
Batiste toured with Charles in 1958, but remained largely unknown to the general population until he recorded with Clarinet Summit in the 1980s. The quartet also included John Carter, David Murray, and Jimmy Hamilton.
Batiste recorded an album, "Bayou Magic" in 1988, and made the 1993 album "Late." "Songs, Words and Messages, Connections" appeared in 1999.
The show at the jazz tent of the festival -- "Marsalis Music honors Alvin Batiste & Bob French" -- went on as planned. "The show will go on," festival spokesman Matthew Goldman said.

Hi Gus. Glad to see you're a big McCartney fan, and glad to see that his post-Beatles material is finally getting the recognition it deserves. He's had a lot of bad press in this country, but I thought he did some pretty good stuff with Wings - some wasn't so good, but so what? his output has been huge - and solo albums McCartney and Ram are classics. I even like Wings Wild Life - Dear Friend is one of my all time favourite Macca songs. People are saying that with the last album and the new one that he's back on form. I say that he's back on GREAT form.
